Can the ATO see my PayPal, Wise or crypto accounts?
Short answer
Yes, in practice. The ATO receives crypto exchange data on hundreds of thousands of people a year, gets overseas account data from other countries automatically, and can serve a formal notice on any provider operating in Australia, PayPal and Wise included. These balances are not invisible or out of reach. Like a bank account, they can be garnisheed. See can the ATO see my bank account for the general picture.
Crypto: the data comes straight from the exchange
The ATO runs a crypto asset data matching program that collects identity details, wallet addresses, transaction history and balances from designated service providers, meaning the exchanges and platforms Australians buy and sell through. The program covers financial years back to 2014-15 and the ATO expects to receive data on around 700,000 to 1,200,000 individuals and entities each year. That data is matched to tax returns to find undeclared gains and to select audits. A wallet you hold yourself is not reported by anyone, but the moment coins move on or off an exchange linked to your identity, the trail exists. If you already owe tax on coins you no longer have, this page covers that specific situation.
PayPal, Wise and other payment platforms
- Formal notices. The ATO has a statutory power to require any person or business to hand over information and documents. PayPal Australia and Wise Australia operate here under Australian licences and answer those notices like a bank does.
- Online selling data. The ATO collects account and sales data from eBay and Amazon for sellers turning over $12,000 or more a year, and matches it to returns. Payments through PayPal for that selling are part of the same picture.
- Overseas balances. Under the Common Reporting Standard, financial institutions in participating countries report accounts held by Australian residents to their own tax authority, which passes the data to the ATO each year. A Wise balance held in a foreign currency, or a foreign bank account, arrives that way.
- International transfers. Funds transfers into and out of Australia are reported to AUSTRAC regardless of size, and AUSTRAC shares its data with the ATO.
None of this requires the ATO to suspect you. It is routine matching, and it is why unexplained income tends to surface a year or two later as an amended assessment or, for people who did not lodge, a default assessment.

Can the ATO take money from these accounts?
A garnishee notice can be served on anyone who holds money for you, and a payment platform with an Australian entity holding your balance fits that description. Crypto held on an Australian exchange is harder for the ATO to reach directly, but the exchange can be required to disclose it and a bankruptcy trustee can claim it. Moving money into these accounts to keep it away from the ATO is not a protection; it is the behaviour that attracts freezing orders and, in extreme cases, a departure prohibition order. DECLARE FIRST, NEGOTIATE SECOND
A voluntary disclosure before the ATO writes to you generally means lower penalties than the same income found by data matching. If you know something is undeclared, lodging or amending is the cheapest option available.
What to do next
- Download your full transaction history from each exchange or platform and check it against what has been declared in your returns.
- If something is undeclared, talk to a registered tax agent about a voluntary disclosure or amendment before the ATO's data matching catches up.
- If the resulting debt is more than you can pay at once, look at a payment plan rather than leaving the money where the ATO can garnishee it.
Related questions
Does Wise report to the ATO?
Wise operates in Australia under Australian licences and must respond to ATO information notices. Balances and accounts held in other countries can also reach the ATO through the Common Reporting Standard exchange with foreign tax authorities, and international transfers are reported to AUSTRAC, which shares data with the ATO.
Can the ATO track crypto in my own wallet?
Not from the wallet itself, because nobody reports it. But exchange data shows coins moving to and from wallet addresses linked to your identity, and blockchain records are public. In practice the ATO usually knows the entry and exit points even when it cannot see the wallet's balance directly.
