Can the ATO cancel my ABN over a debt?
Short answer
Not because of the debt, no. Owing tax is not a ground for cancelling an ABN. The Australian Business Register cancels an ABN when it decides you are no longer carrying on an enterprise, and the usual evidence is silence: unlodged BAS and returns, no reported business income, or a final return. Businesses with an overdue BAS debt often have those gaps too. Cancellation does not cancel the debt.
Why ABNs actually get cancelled
An ABN is only for entities carrying on an enterprise. The register runs regular reviews and cancels ABNs where the signs point to a business that has stopped. The published grounds are:
- No business income has been reported on your tax returns.
- Your lodgements are not up to date, which the register reads as the business no longer operating.
- You said on your latest return that you had stopped business, or you lodged a final return.
- ASIC has deregistered your company.
Notice what is missing. A tax debt, on its own, is not on the list. A business that owes $80,000 in GST but lodges every BAS on time will keep its ABN. A business that owes nothing but has not lodged for two years is at risk. Before cancelling, the register usually writes or texts asking you to confirm you still need the ABN, and gives an automated phone number to do so quickly. Ignored contact is often the last step before cancellation.
Why debt and cancellation tend to arrive together
The link is behaviour, not policy. When cash gets tight, lodging a BAS that will create a debt you cannot pay feels pointless, so people stop lodging. Unlodged BAS is both the trigger for ABN review and the trigger for firmer debt action. The ATO can also issue a default assessment for the missing periods, which is often higher than the real figure.
Cancelling the ABN changes nothing about what is owed. The debt, the interest at 11.43% a year, and the ATO's collection tools all remain. If you were trading through the ABN, cancellation also cancels your GST registration from the same date, which can leave you unable to claim credits or invoice properly. If the business really has closed, our page on ATO debt after closing a business explains what survives.
Some people hope cancellation might make an old sole trader debt harder to chase. It does not. A sole trader's debt is personal, and the ATO's reach into bank accounts, wages and refunds does not depend on an ABN. See our guide to what the ATO can reach.

Getting an ABN back
If your ABN was cancelled and you are still in business, you can reapply online. Where you are still entitled to one, the register will usually reinstate the same number, and you can ask for it to be backdated to the cancellation date so there is no gap. If you disagree with the decision you can lodge an objection.
What speeds it up is fixing the reason for the cancellation:
- Lodge the outstanding BAS and returns. Real figures replace any default assessments and show the enterprise is active.
- Deal with the debt they create. A payment plan is available online for debts up to $200,000, and lodging up to date is normally a condition of one.
- Keep lodging on time from here. That is what keeps the ABN and keeps you out of the firmer action queue.
The ATO cannot shut a trading business down by cancelling an ABN. What it can do is make it very hard to trade without one, which is why lodgement, not the debt, is the thing to fix first.
What to do next
- Check the ABN Lookup site to see whether your ABN is active, cancelled, or flagged for review.
- If you have unlodged BAS or returns, get them lodged, even if you cannot pay, because lodgement is what the register and the ATO both look at.
- If the ABN has been cancelled and you are still trading, reapply online and ask for it to be backdated, then put a payment plan on the debt.
Related questions
Does cancelling my ABN cancel my tax debt?
No. The debt remains payable with interest, and for a sole trader it is personal. Cancelling an ABN also cancels GST registration from the same date, which can complicate invoicing and credits if you are still trading.
Can I get the same ABN back after it is cancelled?
Usually yes, if you are still entitled to one. Reapply online through the Australian Business Register, ask for the reinstatement to be backdated to the cancellation date, and make sure outstanding lodgements are done so the register can see the enterprise is active.
